1.) summarize various approaches (at least 3) that computer scientists have used to solve complex problems using ants and other social insects as models. 2) come up with at least 2 new applications of using social insects as models to solve complex problems
PHEROMONE TRAILS enable
ants to forage efficiently. Two
ants leave the nest at the same
time (top), each taking a differ-
ent path and marking it with
pheromone. The ant that took
the shorter path returns first
(bottom). Because this trail is
now marked with twice as much
pheromone, it will attract oth-
er ants more than the longer
route will.In the traveling salesman problem, a
person must find the shortest route by
which to visit a given number of cities,
each exactly once. The classic problem is
devilishly difficult: for just 15 cities [see top
illustration below] there are billions of
route possibilities.
In some ant species, nestmates are recruited to help when a
single ant cannot retrieve a large prey. Then, during an initial
period that can last up to several minutes, the ants change their
positions and alignments around the object until they are able
to move the prey toward their nest.
ANTS WORK TOGETHER to fold a large leaf (left). Such team-
work has inspired scientists to program robots without the
use of complex software. In an experiment at the University
of Alberta (below), the robots must push an illuminated cir-
cular box toward a light. Even though each robot (right) does
not communicate with the others and acts independently by
following a small set of simple instructions, together the
group is able to accomplish its goal.
1.We can have ants make homes and watch them to maybe discover new ways to do things because when we watched the video i saw that it was a very complex system and it they look really smart i didn't think an ant can do all that it shows how stuff can be made if we work together.
2. We can have ants make their way through a complex problem we can make a natural disaster through there home and video it to see how they cope with it. Like if they work together to fix the problem or just leave and start a new colony. I think this would be a great idea to see how ants solve problems like this.

assignment 18
I will reflect on how social groups are formed throughout junior and senior high school. They are basically formed into a bunch of categories or cliques. Like for example i will break all them down. The girls that are all about being popular and having the best clothes go on these sites showing off whatever they have either if its there body or clothes or money. If i was a father of some of the girls i saw on Facebook myspace or twitter i would never let them see the computer but then you have your other popular guys that run your schools friends database network with showing off what there doing what party there going to talking smack to other guys and so on. Those guys would mostly consist of the jocks and the popular kids. Then you work your way down to the nerds that get made fun of over the internet which is probably the worst. We've all seen it before and you know it happens. They just want to be normal and live there life its not there fault they got put in there friends those are the people they like and share interests and they shouldn't be made fun of it because of it. You can keep going on about the different social friends and all the types of kids but thats just a general of it. I do find similarities in social media because like i said early you can find these things going on in all over the internet i mentioned twitter and myspace but you can find it on blogs even web chats people even make websites with these things occurring.

assignment 17
1. What are your views of the Carvin article? Does online content meet the needs of diverse communities around the world? Consider your service learning experience this semester. What are barriers to access (local info, literacy, language, cultural diversity, accessibility)? Try some web pages using a screen reader and speech to text software: irs.gov, facebook.com, etc. How easy is it to find information, share information?
My views on the Carvin article are that more people should have better literary skills around the untied states. Online content does meet the diverse communities around the world because there is stuff for everyone and everyone can go online. Some barriers are if you cant read or type you cant use these resources and if your poor you can't afford to get on a computer and use these resources. It is really easy to find information and share information you can share information with just typing something and then pressing enter and the whole world can see it.
Create an account at http://myjobscout.org/. The website is intended teach digital literacy. Try stepping through the tutorial on learning basic internet skills. What assumptions are being made concerning the reading skills of the reader? What assumptions are being made concerning the digital literacy level of the reader? Try putting the url of one of the lessons into Google Translator and test out the pages in another language. What happens? How useful is this site for someone who struggles with the English language?
It asks for internet skills and if you had any school experience also if you have a job resume. The assumptions being made are that they want you to be a good reader and well educated. when putting the url of of the lessons into google translator and testing out the page in a different language it doesn't work. The site is not useful if you cant read or write english.

assignment 15
How have your ICT literacy skills evolved over your lifetime with respect to Warschauer’s model (as depicted in Figure 1), the notions of literacy and ICT access (depicted in Table 1)? The digital resources has evolved the most over my lifetime and also human resources especially here at John Carroll. How have the physical, digital, human and social resources of your life allowed you to effectively make use of existing information on the internet as well as contribute new content? They have allowed me to open up to bigger things and connect with more people like friends and family and the sources through advertisement or things like twitter and Facebook. Consider the people you interact with in your weekly service. What physical, digital, human and social resources do they have available with respect to Warschauer’s model? Human because they got us educating them, social because its like a community, and physical because of they games and electronics they have there available.
