ASSIGNMENT 20

"I tweet, therefore I am". What was Brian and Dave's opinion of this?
They think it brings a strong awarness but they want action. "the relationship between cause and effect is defined by action regardless of medium."
I agree with exactly with what both are saying we need action.
Slacktivism (sometimes slactivism) is a portmanteau formed out of the words slacker and activism.what slacktivisim is when people are not will to do what they tweet and they are just putting world out there that they are not really willing to live. The are not will to go out in the world and actually do something that is real and that will make a real impact on people lives. What tracktivism is what they are trying to do, they are trying to get people on a track so that they will go out and do things to help the cause and improve people's live. They want these people to be improving people lives and not just talking out it on the internet. philanthropic capitalism is when people do out and do good for the entire community. When people are trying to improve the live of others and not just making a better life for themselves.. The wristbands are defiantly a interesting point that they talk about in the interview because they talk about how people will get these wristbands just to get a wristband to make them feel like they are apart of something. The bad thing about this is that people do not do anything about the issue that the wristband stands for they just have the wristband. The people that receive the wristband have to be more active and have to be more will to act on the issue and they should not just be getting the wristband to get a wristband. What David mean by "charity is dead, invest in the future" is that we should be look into the future and investing in things that are really important for your futures and your children's futures. We need to really pull ourselves together and lean to move forward and to make a perter life for the people that come after us. I do believe that the campaign is legit because they are investing in people in these countries that do not have a lot of money and they are starting to build a infurstructure in the towns that they are working in. The communities are becoming strong and one day these communities of people will be able to create jobs on their own and they will be able to support themselves.

assignment 19

1.) summarize various approaches (at least 3) that computer scientists have used to solve complex problems using ants and other social insects as models. 2) come up with at least 2 new applications of using social insects as models to solve complex problems

PHEROMONE TRAILS enable ants to forage efficiently. Two ants leave the nest at the same time (top), each taking a differ- ent path and marking it with pheromone. The ant that took the shorter path returns first (bottom). Because this trail is now marked with twice as much pheromone, it will attract oth- er ants more than the longer route will. In the traveling salesman problem, a person must find the shortest route by which to visit a given number of cities, each exactly once. The classic problem is devilishly difficult: for just 15 cities [see top illustration below] there are billions of route possibilities.
In some ant species, nestmates are recruited to help when a single ant cannot retrieve a large prey. Then, during an initial period that can last up to several minutes, the ants change their positions and alignments around the object until they are able to move the prey toward their nest.

ANTS WORK TOGETHER to fold a large leaf (left). Such team- work has inspired scientists to program robots without the use of complex software. In an experiment at the University of Alberta (below), the robots must push an illuminated cir- cular box toward a light. Even though each robot (right) does not communicate with the others and acts independently by following a small set of simple instructions, together the group is able to accomplish its goal.
1.We can have ants make homes and watch them to maybe discover new ways to do things because when we watched the video i saw that it was a very complex system and it they look really smart i didn't think an ant can do all that it shows how stuff can be made if we work together.
2. We can have ants make their way through a complex problem we can make a natural disaster through there home and video it to see how they cope with it. Like if they work together to fix the problem or just leave and start a new colony. I think this would be a great idea to see how ants solve problems like this.

assignment 18

I will reflect on how social groups are formed throughout junior and senior high school. They are basically formed into a bunch of categories or cliques. Like for example i will break all them down. The  girls that are all about being popular and having the best clothes go on these sites showing off whatever they have either if its there body or clothes or money. If i was a father of some of the girls i saw on Facebook myspace or twitter i would never let them see the computer but then you have your other popular guys that run your schools friends database network with showing off what there doing what party there going to talking smack to other guys and so on. Those guys would mostly consist of the jocks and the popular kids. Then you work your way down to the nerds that get made fun of over the internet which is probably the worst. We've all seen it before and you know it happens. They just want to be normal and live there life its not there fault they got put in there friends those are the people they like and share interests and they shouldn't be made fun of it because of it. You can keep going on about the different social friends and all the types of kids but thats just a general of it. I do find similarities in social media because like i said early you can find these things going on in all over the internet i mentioned twitter and myspace but you can find it on blogs even web chats people even make websites with these things occurring.

assignment 17

1.       What are your views of the Carvin article? Does online content meet the needs of diverse communities around the world? Consider your service learning experience this semester. What are barriers to access (local info, literacy, language, cultural diversity, accessibility)? Try some web pages using a screen reader and speech to text software: irs.gov, facebook.com, etc. How easy is it to find information, share information?

My views on the Carvin article are that more people should have better literary skills around the untied states. Online content does meet the diverse communities around the world because there is stuff for everyone and everyone can go online. Some barriers are if you cant read or type you cant use these resources and if your poor you can't afford to get on a computer and use these resources. It is really easy to find information and share information you can share information with just typing something and then pressing enter and the whole world can see it.

Create an account at http://myjobscout.org/.  The website is intended teach digital literacy.  Try stepping through the tutorial on learning basic internet skills. What assumptions are being made concerning the reading skills of the reader?  What assumptions are being made concerning the digital literacy level of the reader? Try putting the url of one of the lessons into Google Translator and test out the pages in another language.  What happens?  How useful is this site for someone who struggles with the English language?

It asks for internet skills and if you had any school experience also if you have a job resume. The assumptions being made are that they want you to be a good reader and well educated. when putting the url of of the lessons into google translator and testing out the page in a different language it doesn't work. The site is not useful if you cant read or write english.

How have your ICT literacy skills evolved over your lifetime with respect to Warschauer’s model (as depicted in Figure 1), the notions of literacy and ICT access (depicted in Table 1)? The digital resources has evolved the most over my lifetime and also human resources especially here at John Carroll. How have the physical, digital, human and social resources of your life allowed you to effectively make use of existing information on the internet as well as contribute new content? They have allowed me to open up to bigger things and connect with more people like friends and family and the sources through advertisement or things like twitter and Facebook. Consider the people you interact with in your weekly service.  What physical, digital, human and social resources do they have available with respect to Warschauer’s model? Human because they got us educating them, social because its like a community, and physical because of they games and electronics they have there available.

assignment 14

Go to wikileaks, pick a post that has information that you are not aware of from any other source, read it and blog about it. Be prepared to discuss about it in class, you can talk about the post itself, whether you think the information should be available to public or not and why.
1. Im all for wikileaks being available to the public. I hate how the government tries to hide so much stuff from us it is totally wrong and i wish more people would see it this way and start an uprise.

Consider the issue of internet freedom broadly. What are the parameters of the debate about the freedom of information?  What are the most convincing reasons why we should have freedom of information and what are the most convincing reasons why we should not? Or should some information be kept as secret? If so, what kind? Why?

2. The parameters of the debate about the freedom of information is that citizens shouldn't know the background of the big corporations and it should be kept in filed but i believe it should be allowed to the public, the government shouldn't keep things from us. The most convincing reasons why we should have them are its part of our rights, but the biggest one would be the government shouldn't keep secrets from the people that vote for them we should know whats going on behind closed doors. the most convincing reasons why not would be that it could spoil business by other business finding information on each other. The information should not be kept a secret were not a communistic country we have a say in our government and should be allowed to know whats going on.

service

Saturday at service i tutored a 1st grader named reander, he was a shy quiet kid. He started talking to me after i talked to him some more. It was sad he couldn't read that well and his writing was not good. He wouldn't be able to read some lines and words and for some things he would just make words up. In his writing his p's looked like q's and had his b's and d's switched up.  I had him work on writing those the alphabet and I kept making him read because i wanted him to get it down. I wouldn't want my child not to be able to read or write. Im glad that he is going to this tutoring and i wish the best for him in the future. I see him here every week so thats good that he is staying with it and he's a good kid.

assignment 13

After i researched some of the censored tweets or postings. I notice they dont say that much and its just getting it out there. In Liao Yiwu they have alot more tweets or postings about it people are serious and care about this you wouldnt see so many postings if not. the liao yiwu has enough information to see whats going on the first one does not. Peoples reaction to this is that they are upset and want something done.

assignment 12

Reverse engineering Chinese censorship: When and why are controversial tweets deleted?China has firewalls and system blocks routed through all the computer systems. They can easily track you down by your IP addresses and gateways. This is how they track down and watch what people say. They are deleted and watched closely when or if you say something controversial to China’s government or anything that they don’t like. Revealed: How China censors its social networks. When tweets or posts harm harmony is also when they get deleted. That is how china sensors online information. These approaches are for the most part effective because the government is really powerful and people are scared to act up and do something. People break the censor by hacking or making fake accounts even using codes and just getting the word out there. There are many ways people to do this in China. What would the reaction be in this country if the government “froze blogs”, censored posts, or cancelled television talk shows?  What is the source of the differences of these reactions (if any)? In this country people would go nuts because it goes against freedom of speech and that’s one of our rights and you’ve seen what happens in history when rights get messed with in the United States.  There would be riots and uprising if the government did this. The source is that our government doesn’t have that much communistic power over cant and us control us to a certain distinct. Why do you think the Chinese government blocks Twitter and Facebook, but allows essentially the same Chinese equivalents? Does the success of Chinese censorship or the “letting off steam” approach play into their motivation? They block it because twitter expands to the whole world and people would figure out all the bad things they were doing and facebook you can post something and have people share it like it comment on it save it and that would spread like rapid fire if there was something they had that they were trying to stop from people to see.

service

After practice on sunday our coach had us help out with the team with special needs kids in the rec. The kids ages varied from like 16 to 50. We introduced our selves and got to know each other. We warmed up with doing passing drills and saying each others names. They all had different things wrong with them some more challenged then others. I really enjoyed doing this and helping out because its good karma and its the right thing to do. After passing we started shooting around with them. Some had really good jump shots and were making a lot of shots. Then we played games like 5 on 5 i was the coach of the one team we had everyone play and made sure the game stayed close so they would tie and both have a good time. I learned a lot and had fun with my teammates and my new friends.

assignment 11

Popular Criticism Cracks China’s Wall of Denial About Pollution

Involved symbolic politics, that is, the use of symbols and narratives to frame an event and influence the public. Many narratives stress the innocence of the victims and the injustices they suffered. Which is the definition I got from the Yang website. I think the symbolic politics the government is using in the article is that the environment is being destroyed. The leverage is on how bad the pollution is getting and how it’s spreading and the health standards. The accountability politics is giving netizens more rights and freedom of speech so they can talk out about this topic and get more attention on it.

assignment 10

They use something called sina.com which was posted off of chinas largest new portal. In china they have alot more people so internet will become a problem i think for them just because the number of users they have so many it could overload. Butthe number of Chinese Internet users is quickly reaching 80 million—surpassing the number of members of the Chinese Communist Party. This is a good thing I think because i want to see china go democratic because I dont believe in communist i think its wrong and hurts the people around it. I got that information with the numbers off the first article The Rising Tide of Internet Opinion in China. In china they are doing the same thing as us over the intrenet when the flood hit millions of people hit the web to talk about it get the word out for help and show care about it. Just as we would do over here. We use social media just about the same way they do but i think we just might have allitle more freedom.

Service 3

At service today I was with the same kid named Brandon as the first time I went. I was glad I got to work with him again because I could see how far he is coming along in his learning. He's happy that I’m his tutor because I talk to him and relate things in math to sports, which he likes a lot. Doing this service you learn a lot about yourself and other people like Brandon. It really does feel great leaving knowing that you are making a difference in someone’s life. He really is a smart kid he just needs someone to keep pushing him to do his work and he will be fine. The hardest thing I think that I have to over come is seeing some kids in high school not being able to read or write. It really breaks my heart seeing that but at least they are trying to get better by going to this tutoring. Brandon was shy coming into this first week but know I think were building a strong relationship and he can trust me talking to him and telling him what he needs to learn and I think he will be successful in the future.

Pro side Closing Statement

The bill will create a licensing regime for exporters of electronics, to allow enforcement agencies to distinguish between covered and exempted electronics. A violation of the bill can result in criminal penalties. Companies violating the law will be posted on a public registry of violators.

Con side Closing Statement

The bill is a bad idea once again because it will just give bigger cooperation’s in the U.S and other large countries more money and more ways to profit of it. The third world countries are working hard to survive and feed their families we should just keep it there but regulate it better by looking out for their health and our earth
