FYS 8

Pro side Closing Statement

The bill will create a licensing regime for exporters of electronics, to allow enforcement agencies to distinguish between covered and exempted electronics. A violation of the bill can result in criminal penalties. Companies violating the law will be posted on a public registry of violators.

Con side Closing Statement

The bill is a bad idea once again because it will just give bigger cooperation’s in the U.S and other large countries more money and more ways to profit of it. The third world countries are working hard to survive and feed their families we should just keep it there but regulate it better by looking out for their health and our earth

service 1

Today at service it was my first time going there to tutor little kids. I picked the church of the covenant because i wanted to help tutor. I love to help little kids i think they are funny and i could entrain them and have fun teaching them. Its really cool when you see that you are making a difference for this kid and that you actually are helping out the best was when after we were done at service a parent came up to me at dismissal and thanked me for helping her child out his name was David he's in 3rd grade i helped him add subtract and multiply we also read a book or two because he said he had a hard time reading. I really liked the turnout on how many kids were there and how it was being run. The people in charge had it all set up and it ran smoothly and everyone had a place and the things needed to help the kids learn. I was really impressed on what they had to offer for the kids like games calculators pencils and books they had so much. I cant wait to keep doing my service i really enjoy it.

fys 6

In the one hand, the profit motive stimulates newer, better or cheaper products and services through a continual process of innovation and ‘creative destruction’. At the same time, the market for these goods relies on an expanding consumer demand, driven by a complex social logic.

It is perhaps not surprising to discover that the desire that consumer goods play to our lives. It's been noted already (Chapter 4) that material artifacts constitute a powerful ‘language of goods’ that we use to with each other— not just about Status, but also about identity, social affiliation, and giving our feelings for each other, our hopes for our family, and our dreams of the good life. This is not to deny that material goods are essential for our basic needs: food, shelter, protection. On the contrary, this role is critical to our physiological flourishing: health, life expectancy, vitality.

I got 6 earths I drive a lot but being at school will make that go down. So I will follow these steps to better the earth.

My carbon footprint was 25 two under the us average

assignment 5

1.     Cellphone Hell -Americans threw out almost 3 million tons electronics in 2006. This is called e-waste. Fastest growing population problem. The article talks about how companies and people buy sell and trade for these electronics because there is money to be made inside of them with gold silver copper and etc.
2.     Purgatory- Talks about what to do with your old phones suggests ideas like sending it out to greenphone.com where they cut you a check for your old phone and plant a tree for it there are many companies like this they could also give your cellphone to others who cant afford new ones overseas. There’s places also doing the wrong thing with phones and using it to profit.
3.     Heaven- No heaven for cellphones. The article talks about how to many new phones come out with newer things that people want. Right now, there are roughly 470 models of phone for sale in the United States. About 16 new ones come out every month. Is an interesting fact I came upon.
4.     It is estimated that over 220 pounds of mine waste is generated to extract the gold for a circuit board of just one cell phone.
5.     I replaced my last phone because it was broken. It is sitting in my house in a dresser. My computer is still in my house. I will sell it somewhere eco friendly and make money.
6.     Mining of this occurs in any country that will not regulate and watch it they way it should be mostly in third world countries. The environmental impact is its releasing harmful chemicals that are in the cell phones and old computers like lead and any other dangerous things that are unsafe a harmful to the people that work with them who don’t use any protection from it.  It is not regulated in these third world countries and that’s why they do it there.
7.     Current electronic waste management contributes to increasing levels of toxic chemicals building up in our bodies. Lead mercury and
Plastics and Polyvinyl Chloride. Brominated Flame Retardants which is so harmful to your body.
8. Disposing of e-waste in landfills has the potential to cause severe human and environmental health impacts. To avoid these risks, the Electronic Waste Recycling Act (Senate Bill 50) was signed into law in 2004. SB 50 established and funded a program for consumers to return, recycle, and ensure safe and environmentally sound disposal of covered electronic devices (CEDs). But the government doesn’t follow through with it.

assignment 4

1. BAN is the world’s only organization focused on confronting the global environmental injustice and economic inefficiency of toxic trade (toxic wastes, products and technologies) and its devastating impacts. Working at the nexus of human rights and environment, we confront the issues of environmental justice at a macro level, preventing disproportionate and unsustainable dumping of the world’s toxic waste and pollution on our global village’s poorest residents. At the same time we actively promote the sustainable and just solutions to our consumption and waste crises — banning waste trade, while promoting green, toxic free and democratic design of consumer products.
A summary of what it is would be works to prevent the globalization of the toxic chemical crisis. They work to ensure national self-sufficiency in waste management through clean production and toxics use reductions and in support of the principle of global environmental justice.

2. 625 Plum Industrial Ct.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 15239
United States
 or
4105 Leap Road
Hilliard, Ohio, 43026
United States

3. Haiti, Afghanistan
If a country has signed the treaty but has not yet ratified it, this is indicated by the word "signature".

4.reduce reuse recycle responsibility
And although espousing this catch-phrase, it is inevitable that most of the emphasis is on recycling, less on reuse, and even less on waste reduction. Moreover, what is forgotten in this view is a vital fourth R: Responsibility. This includes the produoer’s responsibility not to produce products that are toxic or that possess other environmental liabilities, and to take full financial responsibility for the entire life cycle of their wastes and products. It also includes the national responsibility to become self-sutficient in hazardous waste management, as called for in the Basel Convention (see Geiser and Ticlcner, this volume) and to halt all exports of hazardous wastes from developed to developing countries as called for in the Basel Convention’s Ban Amendment.
These views I think in my opinion are at odds with the situation these countries that this is happening to are less fortunate then us and have to do anything to survive. I think instead of stopping it which should help them do it more safely and that would cause a lot less damage to the planet. My role with the responsibility is to make sure I’m not causing any electronic waste and to say something if I see it happen.

5. Its dumping this waste in third world countries because we wouldn’t do it here because people would say something but if we do it somewhere else and they profit of it no one seems to care which is totally wrong.
Some real costs of doing this is destroying our planet that we live on and more importantly its killing people and causing unsafe environments to live in for these countries where it is happening.
It does reflect social justice because just because these people have a different economical way of living and are less fortunate then us there still people and should be treated like it.

omelas alt ending

Omelas alt ending

It was a misty and mysterious night there was a full moon out. The little flute boy was having second thoughts of playing the flute for the rest of his life in Omelas. So he spent all night thinking of a plan out and plotted and plotted until he came up with the perfect escape route and being the nice little boy he was. He remembered the boy in the cellar he was disgusted by the way they treated him.

That night when all was asleep he went into the town with a sack that had little food and little water because he knew leaving and starting over somewhere else was not going to be an easy trip. Before he left he broke into the cellar took the boy and they were off into the night sky. The city didn’t crumble into ruins without the little boy in the cellar it was all fairytale brought down by generations. The two started a successful business that was a coffee shop with live bands playing mostly the little flute boy.

500 word reflection of social justice

500 word reflection of social justice

In digital media my topic is digital media and social justice. Our first assignment we have to write about social justice and its meanings. There were many similarities and differences in the definitions I found for social justice.  What I got out of it with the similarities were that it all had to do with equality and fairness with humans in social classes like the poor rich and middle class.  The word solidary also comes up a lot in most of the definitions and what is right or wrong in society. They were mostly the same not to much different .The most different one was the Catholic Church’s meaning with it being about charity and support for mankind.  My 6th quote of the definition seems to be the most reliable because it’s from someone that researched it and studied about it and I understand this definition the best. After reading all those definitions I get social justice better than I did before. I might approach thinking through social justices impactions of digital media by everyone is different and I’m not going talk about what I have and what others don’t because I know that there is a different social justice with everyone and every social classes has different views and different lifestyles. Celebrities tweeting all the things they have and not realizing that some don’t have anything. I still don’t understand it clearly but have a general idea there’s just too much that goes in to it and a big meaning.
